Yarm Primary School celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday 3rd October with some very special activities!

In KS2 assembly, teachers shared their favourite poems with children, including such classics as Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky. Children from Year 4 also treated their audience to some of their own imaginative poems based on a mysterious creature. They really were very inspiring!

After lunch, teachers then swapped classes and shared some of their favourite poems with children. Mr Jefferies visited Y1/2 and read Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. The children then changed some of the words to the poem. Mrs Chisholm and Mr Painter dropped in on Y5 and encouraged children to make their own raps based on the classic Gran Can You Rap?

Year 3 were also fortunate enough to have a visiting poet for the day! Bob Beagrie helped children to write poems about ‘Truth’ and used real-life objects such as a stop watch to explore metaphor.

Children thoroughly enjoyed National Poetry Day and we know that it has inspired them to continue reading, writing and sharing poetry in and outside of school.
