We had great fun today when we visited Cleveland Ironstone Museum to take part in a series of workshops on the Anglo-Saxons. We looked at maps to study place names that still exist today. Our spinning and weaving skills were put to the test as we found out all about the different plants that were used to dye their clothes. We studied a representation of the Anglo-Saxon Princess burial and were finally able to answer the question that was puzzling us on our classroom display. Dressing up in Anglo-Saxon clothes, we re-enacted the story of Beowulf. Harry was such a star performer! We also learned how a shield wall was constructed in order to defeat the enemy. Our weapons were only models, but we loved seeing the real thing and trying on the helmets and chainmail. We learned lots of gruesome facts about how they tended to their battle injuries. What a lot of exciting and interesting information!
