This week Nursery have been exploring what happens when something melts. We put coloured icebergs into the water tray. Whilst the children explored how the icebergs felt and how they behaved in water, they noticed that the icebergs were getting smaller and the water was turning the colour of the icebergs. The children discussed why this might be and finally came to the conclusion that the ice was melting because the water and the room was warm. Some of the children knew that when ice melts it turns back into water. We then talked about other things that might melt – chocolate, icecream, candles and cheese. To test this out we made cheese on toast and carefully watched what happened when the cheese was put under the hot grill. The children were able to describe the differences from the melted cheese to the non melted cheese. “The cheese has gone runny” “The cheese is now stretchy”. But the best part was being able to eat the cheese on toast for our snack! Yummy!
